Conference Photography is all about lighting and color temperature. Color temperatures deal with overhead lighting, which can be harsh. To fix this, I use, what I call “studio-ing the room” A flash on each side. Annnnd using directional light. A snoot in other words. What this does is balance out the light.
When photoing speakers, I focus on high quality verses quantity. I like to capture images using a mix of flash and overhead light. This creates depth and dimension. I also try to visually photo support what they are saying. Combining presentation content. For example. I can adjust the flashes to be a spotlight technique. Where the speaker is lit, allowing the presentation material on the screen to remain visible. I can also make the image behind them blurry and have the speaker totally in focus. This gives an editorial feel to it.
Beyond the speaker’s state, I aim to capture the energy of the event. Like for example, candid moments. My whole goal is to capture the energy of the conference and what the conference is about. A great time to do that is by using candid photos. This is also excellent for marketing material for next year’s conference.
